Obninsk sits about a hundred kilometres southwest of Moscow, on the Protva River, and from above it looks like a town carved into a forest. Wide avenues and neat blocks of mid-century housing are arranged in clear rectangles, while large patches of woodland remain inside the city limits, separating districts and research sites.
The layout is typical of a Soviet planned town, with broad main streets, generous green spaces and microdistricts laid out in regular groups. The Protva curves along the edge, its loops and wooded banks providing a contrasting organic line to the planned grid.
Obninsk is where the world's first nuclear power plant for a civilian grid began operating in 1954, and it became Russia's first official science city. An Obninsk map poster records that planned character: order on the inside, forest and river all around.
