Morteẕá Gerd lies in Tehran province, south of the capital, on the broad, flat plain that stretches away from the Alborz mountains. On a map it is a compact settlement of close-set streets, surrounded by fields, orchards, industrial plots and the major roads that carry traffic out of Tehran toward the south.
The plain here is almost level, so the pattern of the map comes from human lines: rectangular farm plots, walled gardens, irrigation channels and the wide highways. Over the decades, the growth of greater Tehran has brought new housing and industry into this landscape, and the map shows older village streets next to larger, more regular blocks.
