Moulins lies on the right bank of the Allier, one of the last largely untamed rivers in France. On the map, its wide bed of shifting channels and sandbanks runs along the western edge of the town. The Régemortes bridge, an eighteenth-century stone bridge, carries the main road across it.
The town was the capital of the Bourbonnais and seat of the Dukes of Bourbon. Its old centre is a knot of irregular streets around the cathedral and the Jacquemart, the clock tower with its figures that strike the hours. Boulevards now follow the line of the old ramparts, drawing a clear ring around the historic core.
Notre-Dame cathedral holds the famous triptych by the Master of Moulins, and the national costume centre is housed in former cavalry barracks by the river. A Moulins map poster shows the town's layout plainly: river, bridge, boulevard ring and a dense medieval heart.
