Mtwapa lies on the Kenyan coast in Kilifi County, a short distance north of Mombasa. It has grown quickly in recent decades, spreading out from the main coastal highway into a loose pattern of residential streets, plots and small commercial strips.
The defining feature on the map is Mtwapa Creek, a long, winding inlet of the Indian Ocean that forms the town's southern edge. The highway crosses it on a bridge, and the creek's branching, mangrove-lined shores contrast sharply with the straight road. To the east, the land runs toward the coral coastline and the beaches of the north coast.
Nearby lie the ruins of Jumba la Mtwana, a former Swahili settlement by the sea, a reminder that this coast has been lived on and traded along for centuries. A Mtwapa map poster captures the present town: the spine of the highway, the spreading side streets and the sinuous line of the creek.
