Mubarakpur lies in Azamgarh district, in eastern Uttar Pradesh, a short distance from the city of Azamgarh. It stands on the flat, intensively farmed plain of the Ganges basin, and the map shows a compact, tightly packed town with narrow lanes branching off a few main roads, surrounded by fields and scattered villages.
The town is known across India for its handloom silk sarees, often sold under the Banarasi name, and weaving has shaped both its economy and its streets: many homes double as workshops. It is also a centre of Islamic learning, home to Al Jamiatul Ashrafia, a seminary that draws students from other parts of the country.
