Murlīganj is a town in the Madhepura district of northeastern Bihar, in the low, flat country shaped by the Kosi River and its many shifting channels. On a map the town appears as a dense cluster of lanes around a main road, with the railway running nearby. Beyond the edges, settlement quickly gives way to fields and scattered villages.
The land here is almost perfectly level, and water is never far away. Detailed maps of the area show old river courses, ponds and drainage channels curving through the farmland.
