Nalbāri lies on the north bank of the Brahmaputra in lower Assam, north-west of Guwahati. The land here is almost completely flat, shaped by streams that run down from the Himalayan foothills toward the great river to the south. From above, the town is a compact network of roads and markets surrounded by a patchwork of fields, villages and water.
Nalbāri is the headquarters of its district and a trading centre for the farmland around it, where rice is the main crop. Temples and festivals are an important part of local life and draw people from across the area. On a map, ponds are scattered through the built-up area, as in many towns in Assam.
