Navalcarnero lies southwest of Madrid, in the rolling countryside that leads towards the Sierra de Gredos. Its historic centre is compact, with streets converging on the Plaza de Segovia, a porticoed square with timber galleries typical of Castilian towns. In 1648 the town hosted the wedding of King Philip IV and Mariana of Austria, an event still remembered locally.
From above, the old core is an irregular cluster of streets and small squares, and newer residential areas spread out in more regular blocks around it. Motorways and main roads skirt the town, linking it to the capital. Beyond, the land opens into fields and vineyards, as the area is part of the Vinos de Madrid wine region.
