Nāwa Map Poster & Print
Nāwa lies in central Rajasthan on the northern shore of Sambhar Salt Lake, the largest inland saline lake in India. On a map the town is a dense cluster of streets and lanes with a railway line close by, and beside it the vast, flat expanse of the lake stretches away, pale and open, taking up much of the surrounding landscape.
Salt defines the place. Along the lake shore, extraction works and evaporation pans have been built up over generations, turning parts of the landscape into rigid rectangles of shallow water and crust. The lake is also an important wetland, visited in winter by flamingos and other migratory birds when water levels allow.
A Nāwa map poster pairs two very different textures: the tight, irregular fabric of an old Rajasthani town and the ruled lines of the salt works beside the lakeshore. The result is unusual and graphic, a map that says something about how people have long worked with the land and water here.

Salt pans
Rectangular evaporation pans and embankments line the lakeshore near town, forming a precise geometric pattern unlike anything in the streets.
Old town lanes
The core of Nāwa is a tight web of narrow lanes and small plots, typical of older market towns in this part of Rajasthan.
