Nefas Mewch’a is a town in the South Gondar zone of the Amhara Region in northern Ethiopia, and the administrative centre of Lay Gayint district. It stands high on the Ethiopian plateau in open, exposed country, and its name, which in Amharic refers to the wind, suits the setting. From above, the town is a loose cluster of streets on high ground.
The map shows a modest centre along the main road, with smaller streets and compounds branching away from it before the built area fades into fields. Around it, the highland landscape is a mosaic of farmland and ridges, crossed by tracks linking scattered villages. It is a working rural centre rather than a large city.
