Norfolk sits in northeastern Nebraska at the meeting of the North Fork and the main stem of the Elkhorn River. From above, it is a classic Plains town. There is a regular grid of streets and avenues, a downtown along Norfolk Avenue, and railway lines and highways leading out across flat farmland. The river loops along the southern and eastern sides, breaking the straight lines.
The town was settled in the 1860s by German immigrants from Wisconsin. It grew as a rail and trade centre for the surrounding farm country. Its best-known native is Johnny Carson, who grew up in Norfolk before his long run as host of The Tonight Show. A local museum display still honours him.
A Norfolk map poster is strongly geometric. There are square blocks, long straight roads and the grid extending outward. The Elkhorn's meanders and wooded banks add a natural curve that keeps the composition from feeling rigid. It is a clean, steady image of a Nebraska hometown.
