North Ridgeville covers a wide stretch of flat Lorain County land west of Cleveland. From above it reads as a patchwork: old section roads running straight for miles, with newer housing tucked into the blocks between them. Inside each block, cul-de-sacs curl like fingerprints. The city covers a lot of ground for its population, so there is plenty of open space between the drawn lines.
The ridge in the name refers to low beach ridges left by an ancient, larger ancestor of Lake Erie. Several older routes follow that slightly higher, drier ground. Center Ridge Road, which carries US 20 east to west through town, is the clearest example. The city grew as Cleveland's suburbs pushed west, and the map shows that growth in layers.
