Nova Petrópolis lies in the Serra Gaúcha, the highland region north of Porto Alegre, and was settled in the nineteenth century largely by German immigrants. The town's plan shows that heritage in a measured way: a tidy central grid with squares and gardens, surrounded by roads that leave the grid behind and begin to follow the contours of the hills.
The town is widely regarded as a cradle of cooperativism in Brazil, as the country's first credit cooperative was founded in the area at the start of the twentieth century. It also presents itself as a garden town, and on a map the parks and planted squares show up as regular open shapes set among the blocks of the centre.
