Ometepec lies inland in the Costa Chica region of Guerrero, near the border with Oaxaca, where the coastal plain begins to rise into the Sierra Madre del Sur. The town is built on uneven terrain, and its map reflects that: streets bend around slopes, blocks vary in size and shape, and the centre spreads outward in several directions rather than along a single axis.
It is one of the main commercial and administrative towns of the Costa Chica, serving a surrounding area that is home to Amuzgo and Mixtec communities as well as Afro-Mexican towns closer to the coast. Roads leave Ometepec toward the Pacific and the neighbouring municipalities, and streams cross the countryside, framing the town within hilly land.
