Ouricuri is in the western sertão of Pernambuco, a semi-arid region in Brazil's interior. On a map, it is a compact town on a fairly level plain. A central grid is surrounded by newer streets, and highways and dirt roads run out across the dry caatinga scrubland toward the farms and smaller communities around it.
The town serves as a commercial centre for a large rural area where water is scarce and farming depends on the rains. The landscape around it is shaped by that climate, with seasonal streams, small reservoirs and wide open land where the thorny caatinga vegetation dominates much of the year.
An Ouricuri map poster has a lot of space in it. The dense grid of the town sits in the middle, and the roads reach out in long lines across open country. Small reservoirs and dry riverbeds appear as scattered shapes. It is a spare, calm print that shows the size of the sertão.
