Oyonnax lies in the Haut-Bugey, among the folded ridges of the southern Jura. On the map the town is stretched lengthwise, its streets crowded onto the valley floor and climbing only a little way up the slopes. The contour of the land decides the plan: long roads along the valley, short steep lanes across it, and forest pressing in on both sides.
The town built its name on making things. Combs came first, carved and later moulded from celluloid, and plastics followed, which is why the surrounding area is still called Plastics Vallée. Factory buildings and workshops are scattered among the housing and appear on the map as larger, blockier footprints set into the finer residential grain.
Many people in France also know Oyonnax for its rugby club. An Oyonnax map poster shows the setting behind all of this: an industrial town in a tight mountain valley, with roads running out toward Nantua and the other valleys of the Bugey.
