Pailitas lies in the southern part of Cesar Department in northern Colombia, in the lowlands between the Magdalena valley and the mountains to the east. Its map is simple and direct: a compact grid of town blocks set along a main road, with streets extending outward from it.
Around the town, the land is largely open, used for cattle ranching and farming, and crossed by streams descending from the hills. To the east, the terrain begins to rise toward the ranges along the Venezuelan border, which shows up on the map as a gradual change from straight roads to winding tracks.
