Paippad is in Kottayam district, Kerala, close to the town of Changanassery. It lies on the edge of the Kuttanad region, where rivers, canals and paddy fields cover much of the land. On a map, the settlement is spread out rather than concentrated, with houses along roads and waterways and fields filling the space in between.
Water shapes the map here. Rivers and canals wind across the landscape, and field boundaries follow the line of the water. Roads are narrow and often follow the banks, so the street pattern is irregular and branching, typical of the densely settled but rural areas of central Kerala.
