Palagiano sits in the province of Taranto, on the gently sloping plain that runs down toward the Ionian coast. The map shows a compact historic centre of short, irregular streets, with newer blocks laid out more regularly around it and a scatter of country roads leading off into the fields.
Agriculture shapes almost everything beyond the town's edge. The surrounding plain is known for citrus growing, especially clementines, and the groves divide the land into neat rectangles bordered by lanes and irrigation lines. Further inland, the landscape of the Apulian ravines begins to cut into the terrain.
