Palmaner sits on the elevated plateau in the Chittoor region of Andhra Pradesh, close to the borders with Karnataka and Tamil Nadu. From above, the town looks compact. A dense core of lanes gathers around the main road, and the grid loosens into scattered plots, orchards and field boundaries as it reaches outward. The height of the plateau gives the town a milder climate than the plains below.
The surroundings are what make the map interesting. Irrigation tanks appear as irregular pale shapes. Rocky outcrops break the pattern of fields, and roads leave the centre in several directions towards larger towns across the three state borders. The forested hills of the Kaundinya Wildlife Sanctuary, known for its elephants, lie in the wider district. On paper the town reads as a small, dense knot in open country.
