Pangkham, also known as Pangsang, lies in the northeast of Myanmar's Shan State, close to the border with China. It is the administrative centre of the Wa Self-Administered Division. On a map, the town occupies the lower ground of a hilly landscape. Its streets gather in a valley, and roads wind out along the contours of the surrounding ridges.
The terrain decides almost everything about the layout. Flat land is scarce, so the built-up area is compact and irregular, with streets bending to follow slopes and watercourses. Beyond the town, the map opens into steep, mostly empty hill country. The few roads through it trace long, looping lines.
