Pathirappally lies on the narrow coastal belt north of Alappuzha, where the land sits between the Arabian Sea on one side and the backwater system on the other. From above, it looks less like a town than a long, spread-out settlement. Roads run parallel to the shore, and smaller lanes branch off between houses set among dense groves.
The area belongs to the low-lying Kuttanad and Alappuzha landscape, where water shapes almost everything. Channels and small canals cut through the land, and the flat terrain means that the boundary between field, garden and waterway is often hard to trace. The coastal highway and the railway also run north to south through the area.
