Patuvilāyi lies in Kannur district in northern Kerala, a short distance inland from the Malabar coast. Like much of rural Kerala, it does not form a compact town; houses and small clusters are spread along roads and lanes, set among coconut palms and plots of cultivated land.
The map reflects that dispersed pattern. Roads rarely run straight; they follow the gentle relief of the laterite land, curving around low hills and following watercourses. Streams, ponds and low-lying fields add breaks and soft edges to the lines, and the settlement merges gradually into neighbouring villages.
