Pedra Azul lies in the northeast of Minas Gerais, a region of dry hills and large granite outcrops. From above, the town forms a tight, uneven cluster in a valley. Streets follow the lie of the land rather than a strict grid. At the edges, the built-up area thins quickly into farmland and bare rock, so the town has a clear, compact outline.
The town takes its name, which means blue stone, from a large granite formation nearby that can take on a bluish tone in certain light. Rock domes like this are typical of the landscape of this part of Minas Gerais. They give the country around the town an open, sculpted look that you can pick out even on a simple street map.
