Perumpāvūr lies in the Ernakulam district of Kerala, east of Kochi, in the low, green country near the Periyar river. The map shows a busy central area along the Main Central Road, with streets branching off into residential areas. These fade into the loose, tree-covered settlement pattern typical of Kerala, where town and countryside blend together.
The town is widely known for its timber and plywood industry. Numerous sawmills and wood-processing units operate in and around it, and it has become one of the region's most important wood trading centres. That industry has also brought many workers from other Indian states.
