Phalodi lies in the Thar Desert of western Rajasthan, and its map is defined by contrast. The old town is a compact mass of narrow, winding lanes, the kind of dense layout that keeps streets shaded in fierce heat. Around it the land opens into wide, nearly empty desert, crossed by a few straight roads and the railway.
The town is known across India for two things. It has long been a centre of salt production. In May 2016 it recorded 51 degrees Celsius, the highest temperature ever measured in the country. Nearby Khichan, known for the demoiselle cranes that spend the winter there, adds to the region's quiet reputation.
