Piraquara lies east of Curitiba, where the plateau begins to climb toward the Serra do Mar. On a map the town looks more open than most of the metropolitan area. The built-up neighbourhoods cluster in the west, closer to the city. To the east the land is dominated by water, woodland and rising ground.
The reservoirs are the defining feature. Dams around Piraquara hold water that supplies much of Greater Curitiba. On the map they spread out as smooth, irregular shapes with narrow arms reaching into the valleys. Large parts of the municipality are protected to keep the water clean, which is why so much of the land stays unbuilt.
A Piraquara map poster shows a place that marks the boundary between city and mountain. The street pattern thins out as you move east. The reservoirs catch the eye in the middle of the frame, and the Serra do Mar begins at the edge. It is a quiet composition, with more water and green than streets.

To the east the land rises toward the coastal mountain range. Roads become fewer and more winding, and forest fills the rest of the frame.
Urban west side
The main neighbourhoods sit to the west, closer to Curitiba. There the street grid is at its densest, before thinning out toward the protected land.
