Plainville sits in Hartford County, central Connecticut, on the relatively flat valley floor that gave the town its name. On the map, the difference between the level centre and the higher ground around it shows up quietly. Streets spread easily across the plain, and ridges to the east and west shape the town's outer edges.
The Pequabuck River winds across the town and adds a soft, irregular line to an otherwise ordinary suburban street pattern. Plainville was also a stop on the Farmington Canal in the nineteenth century, and railways later followed similar corridors. Traces of those old transport routes help explain the directions of some of the main roads.
