Poggioreale is a district in the east of Naples, lying between the historic centre and the city's eastern outskirts. Its name recalls a royal villa that once stood here, a reminder of an era when the area was on the edge of the city. Today, it is a thoroughly urban part of Naples, dense and busy, though its layout is shaped by several large institutions.
The most prominent of these, both on the ground and on the map, are the cemeteries on the slopes of the district, including the large monumental cemetery with its terraced rows and chapels. Nearby, the extensive tracks and yards leading to Napoli Centrale railway station create broad bands of parallel lines, and the modern towers of the Centro Direzionale business district rise just to the south.
Poggioreale is also known across Italy for its prison, one of the country's largest.
