Pollachi lies in western Tamil Nadu, south of Coimbatore, where the plains begin to rise toward the Anamalai Hills. On a map the town appears as a dense centre of narrow streets with main roads spreading out toward Coimbatore, Palakkad and the hill country. Beyond the edge of town the pattern opens into farmland, much of it coconut plantations crossed by small lanes.
The town is widely known as one of South India's major markets for coconuts and jaggery, and its green surroundings have made it a frequent location for film shoots. Trade has shaped the plan. The busiest streets run along the roads that bring produce into town, and the older lanes near the market are the most tightly packed.
