Ponmundam lies in Malappuram district in northern Kerala, not far from the town of Tirur. Like many places in this area, it isn't a town with a clear edge; on the map, it's a network of roads and lanes spread over gently rolling land, with houses along each path and fields in between. The pattern seems scattered at first, but it has a logic of its own.
The houses keep to the higher, drier land, and the lowest ground is used for paddy and wetlands. The roads follow this pattern, winding along the higher land and splitting into smaller lanes that lead to individual homes.
