Porteirinha lies in the north of Minas Gerais, in a semi-arid region of Brazil where the land is dry for much of the year and farming depends on seasonal rains and irrigation. The town is a local centre for the surrounding rural area, and its growth has followed the roads that link it to neighbouring towns in the region.
From above, Porteirinha shows a fairly regular street pattern around a central square, with blocks extending outward in several directions and newer neighbourhoods at the edges. Beyond the urban area, fields, pastures and dry scrub fill the landscape, crossed by roads and tracks. Hills and higher ground are visible at a distance in parts of the municipality.
