Pullman sits in south-eastern Washington, in the Palouse, a region of smooth, wind-built hills covered in wheat fields. The town grew where several creeks join the South Fork of the Palouse River. Its streets climb out of that valley onto the surrounding hills, known locally as College, Military, Pioneer and Sunnyside. On a map, the grid bends and breaks wherever the slopes steepen.
Pullman is home to Washington State University. The campus takes up a large share of the town's east side and shapes its rhythm through the academic year. The city of Moscow, Idaho, and its own university lie only a few miles east across the state line, which makes this a rare pairing of neighbouring college towns.
