Pulü lies in the rolling hill country of Chongqing municipality, north-west of the main urban area. From above, the town is a compact cluster of streets set in a valley. Roads curve along the lower ground and climb gently over the ridges toward neighbouring villages. Beyond the houses, the land breaks into small fields, terraces and ponds.
Towns of this kind act as market and service centres for the surrounding countryside, where farming follows the contours of the hills. Water is stored in small reservoirs and ponds, and the network of narrow rural roads connects many scattered hamlets. The overall pattern is irregular, practical and closely tied to the land.
