Qinglian lies in the mountainous northeast of Chongqing Municipality, a region of steep ridges and deep valleys drained by tributaries of the Yangtze. From above, the town is shaped entirely by its terrain: streets squeeze into the valley floor and climb short distances up the slopes, forming a narrow, elongated settlement.
In this part of China, flat land is scarce, and towns tend to follow rivers and roads through the mountains. On the map, Qinglian's streets run parallel to the valley, with winding roads leading out over the ridges. Around the town, terraced fields and forested hills fill much of the space.
