Qishan lies in the far north of Jiangsu province, in the broad lowland near Xuzhou where the land is almost entirely flat. On a map, this kind of terrain shows up as a scatter of villages joined by straight country roads, with the town itself forming a denser knot where several of those roads meet.
Because the plain offers so little relief, the human layout does most of the drawing. Field boundaries, irrigation ditches and village lanes tend to run in parallel lines, and the built-up area grows outward from its main streets in a fairly regular way.
