Qitang is a town in Chongqing municipality, in the hilly country north-west of the central city. The terrain here is typical of the Sichuan Basin's margins: rounded hills, narrow valleys and farmland shaped into terraces. On the map, the town fills the flatter ground available, and its outline is ragged where the slopes begin.
Streets follow the contours rather than any grid. Main roads curve along valleys and around hillsides, while smaller lanes climb or dead-end against steeper ground. Beyond the town, rural roads twist between terraced fields, ponds and scattered villages, forming a busy, irregular pattern of lines across the landscape.
