Quarto Map Poster
Quarto lies in the Campi Flegrei, the volcanic area west of Naples, just inland from Pozzuoli. The town occupies a broad, flat plain enclosed by low hills, a basin whose shape comes from the area's volcanic past. On a map, the built-up area fills the floor of the basin, and the surrounding slopes appear as a green ring.
The street pattern shows rapid growth. The town expanded in the second half of the 20th century, and its main roads cross the plain with housing lined along them, while newer blocks fill the gaps in a dense, partly irregular fabric. Roads climb out of the basin toward Pozzuoli, Naples and the coast.
A Quarto map poster shows a town shaped by geology: a nearly enclosed plain, a dense network of streets across it and the rim of hills around. The name is traditionally explained as coming from the fourth Roman mile from Pozzuoli, a reminder of how old the routes through the area are.
