Quixelô is a small municipality in the interior of Ceará, in north-eastern Brazil, in the Centro-Sul region near Iguatu. It is in the semi-arid landscape known as the sertão, where rainfall is seasonal and water is closely tied to rivers and reservoirs. From above, the town is compact, a few rows of blocks around a central square and a church.
The surrounding municipality lies within the Jaguaribe river basin, Ceará's most important watershed. On a map, the countryside is mostly open: scrubland, scattered farm plots, dirt roads and seasonal streams that are dry for much of the year. Small ponds and dams appear as irregular shapes, because stored water is essential in this climate.
