Rafaela stands on the flat pampas of central Santa Fe province, and its map is almost pure geometry. The town was founded in 1881 as an agricultural colony, largely by European immigrants, and laid out on a strict grid of square blocks. A central plaza sits at the heart of it, with wide avenues crossing the grid and linking the centre with the farmland beyond.
Rafaela is one of the main towns of Argentina's dairy region, surrounded by fields and milk farms, and home to food and machinery industries. It is also known for its motor racing circuit, an oval track on the edge of town that has hosted races for decades.
