Rahden lies in the far north-east of North Rhine-Westphalia, in the Minden-Lübbecke district, close to the border with Lower Saxony. It is not a single compact town but a group of former villages brought together into one municipality. On the map this shows as several small clusters of streets connected by long country roads across open farmland.
The landscape is almost completely flat, part of the northern German lowland. The Große Aue river winds through the area, and its line, together with drainage ditches and field boundaries, gives the map a quiet rhythm. Scattered farmsteads and rows of trees along roads break up the open ground between the settlements.
