Reggane lies in Adrar province in southern Algeria, in the Touat oasis region, deep in the Sahara. On a map, very few places are as stark. A compact grid of streets and a band of palm gardens sit on the desert floor, and beyond them almost nothing is drawn. The town is also a traditional starting point for the road south across the Tanezrouft, one of the Sahara's emptiest stretches.
The Touat oases have depended for centuries on foggaras, underground channels that bring water to the gardens. Reggane is also known for a darker episode: in 1960, France carried out its first nuclear test in the desert nearby. The site is a reminder of how empty and remote this land was considered.
A Reggane map poster is mostly space. The small, dense town and the green edge of its gardens stand out against a wide white field, crossed by a few roads heading into the desert. The result is minimal, strong and a little austere.
