Rembertów is a district on Warsaw's eastern edge, on the right bank of the Vistula and far from the dense centre. On a map it looks unusual for a capital: residential streets in small, irregular grids, broken up by large areas of pine forest and open military ground. The built-up area feels more like a series of garden settlements than part of a major city.
The district has long been tied to the army. The War Studies University occupies a large campus here, and extensive training grounds lie nearby. Their broad, empty shapes stand out on a Rembertów map poster against the finer grain of the housing, giving the composition large, calm areas balanced by clusters of detailed streets.
The railway line east from Warsaw crosses the district in a straight stroke, and the stations along it form small local centres.
