Rocha Map Poster
Rocha is the capital of the department of the same name in south-eastern Uruguay. The city lies inland, a short drive from the Atlantic. Its map shows the regular chequerboard of blocks common to towns founded in the Spanish colonial period, centred on a main square. Streets run straight out to the city edge, where they meet pasture and low, gently rolling ground.
To the south, the Laguna de Rocha opens toward the ocean, one of several coastal lagoons that shape this part of the country. The department's coast includes La Paloma, Cabo Polonio and Punta del Diablo, so the city serves as the administrative centre of a region better known for its beaches and protected wetlands.
