Roseville lies in Placer County, northeast of Sacramento, where the valley floor begins to rise toward the Sierra Nevada foothills. At its core is Old Town, built alongside the railroad, and beside it runs one of the largest rail yards on the West Coast, a long band of parallel tracks that dominates the map. Interstate 80 crosses the city diagonally.
The city grew up around the railroad in the early twentieth century and expanded rapidly from the 1980s onward. Most of today's Roseville consists of newer neighbourhoods with winding streets, cul-de-sacs and landscaped parks. Dry Creek and its tributaries run through the city as green corridors, bordered by trails and open space.
