Ruzayevka lies in the Republic of Mordovia, a short distance from the regional capital Saransk, and its map is dominated by the railway. Lines arrive from several directions and meet in a large junction with extensive yards, and the town's neighbourhoods sit in the wedges of land between them, connected by crossings and bridges.
The town grew as a railway settlement and remains an important junction in the Volga region's rail network, with much local employment tied to the lines. Around the tracks there are quarters of low wooden houses, Soviet-era apartment blocks and industrial areas, and beyond them the forest and farmland of central Russia.
