Sagunto lies just north of Valencia, a short distance inland from the Mediterranean coast. The old town climbs the slopes of a long, narrow hill crowned by a fortress whose walls run along almost the entire ridge. Below, the streets become tighter and more irregular, and the Palancia river passes to the north on its way to the sea.
In 219 BC Hannibal laid siege to the city, then called Saguntum, an event that led to the Second Punic War between Carthage and Rome. The Roman theatre on the hillside, controversially restored in the 1990s, remains one of the most recognisable sights. On the coast, the separate district of Port de Sagunt grew around a twentieth-century steelworks.
A Sagunto map poster captures the unusual shape of the municipality: a historic town at the foot of its castle hill, a band of fields and orchards, and the port town with its regular grid beside the beaches.
