Sahavato is a town in the Vatovavy Region of south-eastern Madagascar. It lies a short distance inland from the Indian Ocean coast, in the humid belt where the island's central highlands fall away towards the sea. From above, the settlement is modest and irregular: a cluster of lanes and footpaths rather than a planned grid, surrounded by cultivated valleys and wooded slopes.
The landscape does most of the drawing on a map like this. Streams move down from the higher ground to the west and cut shallow valleys that are often given over to rice. Roads follow the ridges and the easier gradients, so the town's few main routes bend and fork instead of running straight. In black and white, the pattern looks organic, closer to a watershed diagram than to an urban plan.
