Sahuayo de Morelos lies in the northwest of Michoacán, in the Ciénega region close to the southeastern shore of Lake Chapala, Mexico's largest lake. The town has a classic Mexican plan: a regular grid of blocks around a central plaza and parish church, expanding outward into newer neighbourhoods as the population grew.
It forms a close pair with neighbouring Jiquilpan, and the two towns are linked by road across the flat, fertile land of the valley. Hills rise nearby, while the lake shore lies a short distance to the north, giving the surrounding landscape a mix of plain, slope and water.
