Saint Clair Shores lies along the western shore of Lake St. Clair, just north of Detroit in Macomb County. From above, it is a dense suburban grid of short blocks and long parallel streets, bounded by the lake on one side and cut through by the Interstate on the other. The shoreline is the most distinctive part of the map, broken into small inlets.
Those inlets are canals, dug so that homes could have their own boat access to the lake. They give the eastern edge of the city a comb-like texture that looks almost architectural in black and white. Jefferson Avenue runs close to the water, and its stretch of marinas and restaurants is known locally as the Nautical Mile.
